As an investor, you are trained to evaluate the indirect and long-term effects of management teams’ decisions on short and long-term value.And so, ever since I joined Plum almost three years ago, I've always found it peculiar how so many organizations, small and large, tend to optimize for the directly observable, notional cost incurred on employee benefits every year. In fact, it is almost a default setting within some teams, who choose to negotiate this notional cost down to the last rupee. This decision is taken sometimes at the cost of curtailing benefits much loved by the team and delivers savings that are almost always offset by the cost of the time spent by multiple team members on this negotiation.What’s more unfortunate is that this approach ignores the "total cost", which would include the indirect and long-term costs related to attrition, productivity and talent density among others. It is often about today’s “price” and seldom about “value”. This didn't really make sense. And so, we decided to do some homework. Our research showed a simple way forward. Most organizations could deliver significantly better benefits to their teams + enjoy gains in all the difficult areas simply by reallocating (not increasing) their compensation budgets by as little as 1%!
