How can you help a leader develop emotional intelligence when they are resistant to feedback?
If you can ask questions that are non-threatening, such as ‘what were you hoping for in that situation,’ or ‘did that response surprise you,’ you may trigger some reflection which may lead to an increase in awareness.Upvote
-
What are some strategies for using EI to manage conflict in an oral communication setting?
Emotional intelligence, or emotional and social competencies are the building blocks of effective communication and conflict management, as they are a roll-up of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Without these competencies, you could not possibly effectively manage conflict.Upvote
-
What causes burnout in Emotional Intelligence team members?
This is not accurate. Effective competencies do not lead to burnout, a lack of having them- or a lack of utilizing those competencies might. EI are tools that help prevent burnout through awareness and action. Self-awareness is not wallowing in the emotions or experiences that we recognize we have, it is being accurate in the assessment of how we feel, labeling our emotions, and accepting that we are experiencing them. This brings us strength of understanding. It is individual what helps each of us, but we all have different ways that we can renew to keep going under times of stress. Awareness allows us to recognize when that is and what we need to do. We then need to enact management skills to take the steps we need.2 Upvotes

How can you use EI to address team burnout?
Emotional and social competencies- self-awareness and self-management skills in particular, provide a strong foundation for your understanding of yourself and the ability to create a plan for reflection, resilience, and wellness. If you can understand how you feel and what is impacting you, you can make a plan to sustain yourself and be aware of when you may need to make some changes and need some additional support.Upvote
-
How can you reduce stress and anxiety at work?
We all experience stress and stressors occur throughout the day and may have more or less impact upon us depending on a variety of factors. Identifying triggers is important so you can retrain yourself and make a plan on how to RESPOND instead of react. But first you need a foundation of self-awareness to even identify what your triggers are! If you can think of the last time something happened that made you feel out of control and want to react with a quick response of frustration or anger, for example, this provides an opportunity to reflect on how you were feeling and what led to that feeling. Build your awareness first and then your triggers will become clear as you flex your reflection muscle on a more regular basis.Upvote
-
How do you learn from emotional failures?
I don't believe there is such a thing as an 'emotional failure.' Emotions occur and we cannot stop them, but we can decide how to interpret and use our emotions. Experiencing a negative emotion is not a bad thing. We need to balance the good and the not so good and figure out how to respond appropriately, instead of react without thinking- whether that is within ourselves or how we act with others. It is harmful to think that we can fail emotionally. What we do with our emotions and how we use them is a cognitive function and that means we can always learn and improve in how we understand and address our emotions.1 Upvote

First and foremost, physicians: the clinical versus leadership identities of physician leaders
Journal of Health Organization and Management
Physicians are commonly promoted into administrative and managerial roles in U.S. hospitals on the basis of clinical expertise and often lack the skills, training or inclination to lead. Several studies have sought to identify factors associated with effective physician leadership, yet we know little about how physician leaders themselves construe their roles.
Phenomenological interviews were performed with 25 physicians at three organizational levels with physicians affiliated or employed by four hospitals within one healthcare organization in the United States between August and September 2010. A rigorous comparative methodology of data collection and analysis was employed, including the construction of analytic codes for the data and its categorization based on emergent ideas and themes that are not preconceived and logically deduced hypotheses, which is characteristic of grounded theory.
These interviews reveal differences in how part time versus full time physician leaders understand and value leadership roles versus clinical roles, claim leadership status, and identify as physician leaders on individual, relational and organizational basis.Other authors

The affect of vision and compassion upon role factors in physician leadership

The career path for many professionals is often into a leadership role, yet many professionals do not have the competencies or inclination to lead. This study explores physician leaders as a representative group of professionals. While there have been many efforts at understanding the characteristics of effective physician leaders, a greater understanding is needed on the nature of physician leadership. The largest healthcare organization for physician leaders in the United States was surveyed to gain a greater understanding of the nature of leadership. Partial Lease Squares (PLS) was used to analyze results from 677 online surveys to understand the causal relationship of role conflict and role endorsem*nt to participation. The findings reveal the mediating influence that positivity exerts upon participation, and offers health care leaders an opportunity to increase understanding of the social identification process that leads a higher level of professional participation, which may increase effectiveness for physicians in leadership.

- Grandon Gill “Joann Quinn has worked with the Muma College of Business' DBA program from before its launch--offering her suggestions on program design based on her experiences at Case Western--and, subsequently, as both an instructor and dissertation advisor. Her performance in both contexts has been nothing short of spectacular. She has proven to be extraordinarily generous of her time with students and her (much-requested) advice has always been well-suited to working executives (vs. traditional fulltime PhD students). As a result, we continually find ways to place her in an ever-growing role in the program.”
- Mike Kelly “Fierce is the word that comes to mind when I think of Joann Quinn, and after each interaction with her I find myself inspired to do more, to stretch farther and to think more strategically. Joann brings great knowledge and science to the table, of course, and seems to have endless energy but really, for me, it's her ability to identify the root of an issue, to boil it to its essence and then to relentlessly focus on solving it that is the truly special ability of Joann. Joann is a truth-teller, too, and why I gravitate to her - in a world filled with noise, Joann Farrell Quinn is the signal. Thank you for your partnership, Joann! ”
