One of the finest trips in Colorado la from Denver to Wark over the Colorado Northwestern railroad, a narrow guage road just completed this summer. The route is known A8 Switzerland Trail," and is said to be one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the world. Starting in the foot hills, which are at an altitude of 5,000 feet, the road climbs the mountains to an altitude of 10,000 feet, where the town. of Wood nestles on the side of a mountain, the peak of which rises 2,000 feet higher, The climbing of the mountains by a railroad train is a revelation. to visitors from east.

At portions of the route the grade of the road bed is 5.2 per or 275-feet to the mile, a -grade which looks too steep for even the heavy, low wheeled engines, but they climb at a slow speed. The distance from Boudar to Wood is 26 miles, and it takes two hours to make the trip. The engine consumes four tons of coal and 24,000 gallons of water in making a trip up. and scarcely any coal: or- water going- down, although the time consumed is almost the same. The tender is almost as large as the engine, and has be reAlled once on the way up.

The road skirts the mountains, winding round and round them at an ever increasing height. Ats DO place is there a straight track enough to allow a long train to stand in a straght line. The erer changing outlook from the mountain side is beautiful beyond description. Rugged cauyons, wooded mountain sides, smooth slopes, tall peaks and glimpses of broad prairies beyond the lower mountains greet the eye in a grand panaroma that defies alike the skill of the poet's pen- and the artist's brusb. In places the forest fires bare raged, and dense forests have given place to thickets of tall poles, stripped of follage, and from which the charred bark has dropped, leaving them bare and white.

A practical editor described such a place as "a telephone -pole chard with the poles already skinned." Occasionally a horseman is seen, following a mountain trail, or wagon loaded with precious ore from one of the mines. Down In the valleys the burros graze contentedly, and a thin ribbon of white marks the course of a brook down the valley between the opposite mountains. Occasionally a mining camp is passed, and the activity of cirilization recalls the traveler from his day dreams to the fact that be is at the doorway to one of nature's atorebouses, and that below all the grandeur and beauty man finds that which bays everytbing but bappiness in this world of ours.
