Abstract

This chapter discusses the continued policing of Harrison County beaches. It provides an overview of the federal suit of the United States v. Harrison County case. The police walked a fine line between discouraging and breaking up the gatherings while avoiding further arrests during the rebellion against Jim Crow traditions. Moreover, the wade-ins have sparked more conviction regarding the use of all federal land. The chapter elaborates on the desegregation event at Desoto National Park, which eventually drew national attention, and local journalist Tom Cook's efforts to help the State Sovereignty Commission in minimizing the publicity of the event's coverage.
